Post the numbers or do not post the deal

Every property group eventually fills up with photographs of houses and nobody saying what anything cost. This one is the other way round. Price, bond, rate, levy, rates and taxes, expected rent, and what you think the yield is. The group will tell you whether you are right.

What we mean by real rates

Freelancers underquote because nobody will say a number first. So here is the deal: if you ask what to charge, you post what you currently charge. Discipline, years, city, and whether that is hourly, daily or a retainer. Nobody is going to judge a low number — that is precisely the number worth fixing.

Ask before you spend, not after

Most of what gets posted in dropshipping groups is a post-mortem. By then the money is gone and the only thing left to do is describe it. Bring the supplier, the ad budget or the courier quote here BEFORE you commit. That is the whole reason this exists and the only thing that saves anybody anything.

Which topics actually carry the paper

Paper 1 and Paper 2 are not evenly weighted across the syllabus, and most of the panic in October comes from having revised as though they were. The free side of this group covers the breakdown and the method. The paid side is full worked past papers and marking, because writing those up properly takes real hours.

Payload is not what the brochure says

The number on the spec sheet is before your canopy, your drawers, your long-range tank, your passengers and the water. Most loaded bakkies on a Friday afternoon are over their legal limit and their owners do not know it. Weigh yours. Post the weighbridge ticket. It is the single most useful thing anyone can put in…

The pricing mistake almost everyone starts with

Materials plus a bit is not a price. It is a hobby that costs you money and hides that fact for about eight months. Post what you make and what you charge, and this group will tell you honestly whether it pays for your hours. It is the most useful thing we can do for each other and the hardest thing to ask for.

Read this before you post a rate question

Rate questions are the most common thing here and the least useful when they are vague. Include your years, your stack, whether the work is local or offshore, and whether you are quoting hourly, daily or a monthly retainer. A number with no context starts an argument. A number with context starts a group.

Post your regular route and the time you run it

The most useful thing this group can build is a picture of where people actually run and when — not a race calendar, the ordinary Tuesday route. Suburb, distance, rough time of day, and anything a newcomer should know before they try it alone.

Post the fire, not just the plate

Every braai group I have been in turns into photographs of meat with no method attached. This one is for the method. What wood, how long you let it burn down, where the coals ended up, and what you would do differently. The picture is the least useful part.
